Twenty-Two Years of Diplomatic Relations Between Cambodia and Timor-Leste Marked by Progress and Mutual Support
PHNOM PENH, July 25, 2024 — In a commemoration of over two decades of diplomatic relations, the Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste to Cambodia, Ermenegildo Kupa Lopes, highlighted the significant strides made between the two nations since the establishment of their ties in 2002.
During a special interview with the Cambodian state-owned news agency AKP, Ambassador Lopes reflected on the 22 years of evolving relations marked by frequent high-level exchanges and collaborations across various sectors including politics, trade, tourism, and culture.
Ambassador Lopes commended Cambodia for its pivotal role in supporting Timor-Leste's efforts to integrate into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). He specifically lauded the contributions of Hun Sen, the former Prime Minister of Cambodia, whose advocacy was instrumental in bringing Timor-Leste closer to ASEAN membership.
“Timor-Leste greatly values Cambodia’s ongoing support and is eager to further strengthen our bilateral ties. We are optimistic that with Cambodia’s significant support, Timor-Leste will soon join ASEAN as its 11th member,” stated Ambassador Lopes.
The establishment of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Timor-Leste on July 29, 2002, has since unfolded into a fruitful partnership, fostering not only political and economic ties but also cultural and educational exchanges that have benefited both countries.
